Design from the floor up!

That’s one of the battle cries of designers, and it means to select the floor first, and then work on the rest to coordinate and unify.

Suppose you’ve selected mahogany hardwood floors. All hardwood has beautiful undertones, secondary colors that are mixed into the base. Mahogany often has red, so layer it with a rug that will bring out the highlights. Then balance wall color and accessories, and you have a room with sizzle.

But they're workhorses, too

Small, but powerful, area rugs will:

Muffle noise. Sometimes people can be bothered by an all-wood room, because of “hollow” sounds, footsteps or beeping devices. Since there’s no fabric in the area to soak up the noise, the vibrations just bounce off the walls.
Add comfort. Ever wonder why you feel so tired and achy after a day at the shopping mall? The flooring is a hard surface and every time you take a step, your body receives a jolt. If you spend long hours in a room such as the kitchen, place some rugs on the floor to cushion the blow.
Be easy to clean. Just shake them out! They’ll also help keep the rest of the house clean; if they’re placed by entrances, people have a place to wipe feet.
Create delineated spaces. You may want to section off an area as a home office or separate the living and dining space that’s together in one big open plan.
